Barclays confirms worrying new scam attempt & explains how to check if numbers are genuine

So, what are some of the top tips the bank suggests for reducing the risk of falling victim to a fraud attempt?

For incoming calls, it’s suggested people make a note of the number, end the call, and then check it via the online number checker tool.

“If it’s genuine, dial the number back from your phone (don’t return the call automatically – wait, listen for the dial tone to be sure the line is clear, and then call),” the bank states.

Meanwhile, those who take an incoming call but either don’t or can’t end it, are advised to check where the call is coming from before calling back.

Customers are also advised to “be wary of fraudsters who ‘spoof’ phone numbers”.
