Cooper will direct the movie for Netflix and star as composer Leonard Bernstein, opposite Mulligan who will play the role of Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre.

Succession star Jeremy Strong will play the role in the film of John Gruen, the author who penned the Bernstein biography The Private World of Leonard Bernstein.

Cooper and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Josh Singer penned the script, which will chronicle three decades in the life of feted composer, focusing on his career and his marriage.

Cooper in January spoke with Mahershala Ali for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, opening up about the passion he had for the project about Bernstein.

‘I wanted to be a conductor since I was a kid,’ Cooper told the publication. ‘I was obsessed with it, asked Santa Claus for a baton when I was eight. Listening to music, falling in love with it and being able to really know every single moment of a piece, like Tchaikovsky’s Opus 35 in D major, this violin concerto.

‘I could do it as if I know everything about it without really being able to speak the language, obviously.’

Cooper told the outlet that Steven Spielberg was initially slated to direct a Bernstein biopic and asked him to play the leading role, to which Cooper successfully asked him if he could take over the project.

‘Steven has a lot of interests – he’ll just choose one thing and all of the other things will be on hold,’ Cooper said. ‘I think he knew he wasn’t going to make that movie for a while. He was kind enough to hand it off to me, and that’s what I’ve been doing for the last four-and-a-half years, and we start shooting in May.’

Netflix’s Scott Stuber told Variety about the pre-production process in December: ‘We’ve done a lot of work on the makeup. We’ve done a lot of work on the voice.

‘I’m excited to see someone so deeply focused on creating a story that means so much to him. And Carey Mulligan is an incredible actress.’
