According to the FT, Boris Johnson asked his Foreign Secretary to tone down her bill giving ministers the power to override the protocol for fear of stoking tensions with the EU – but Eurosceptic Tories have warned the PM that they will block it if this is the case.
MP Bernard Jenkin told the Commons: “If the Government brings forward a bill that does not hold out the serious prospect of the restoration of power sharing in Northern Ireland and the restoration of the Good Friday Agreement, I will vote against it.”
Observer Policy Editor Michael Savage warned of the looming “Brexit battle”.
He shared on Twitter: “The Brexit battle in parliament is coming back in a big way.
“Despite claims, several sources tell me the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill will contain ‘notwithstanding’ clauses, effectively overriding the existing deal.
“Cue legal row and return of Tory Brexit wars.”
