‘I think the dance scenes and the sex scenes help propel the narrative forward and you can see relationships change as characters dance together.

It’s amazing how that whole industry has just come on, even in a year. There are new tricks to the trade – little cushions – and it’s amazing what you can do with a half-inflated netball,’ he told The Radio Times.

It comes shortly after Jonathan said he felt pressured to hide his sexuality in order to further his career after being told a publicly gay actor would struggle to win roles.

The star came out in 2018, two years before finding fame in Bridgerton.

But he admitted to having reservations about public disclosure after discussing the issue with actor friends and casting directors about the difficulties associated with being openly gay in the TV and film industry.

‘At the time he was told “There’s two things we don’t want to know: If you’re an alcoholic or if you’re gay,”‘ he told the publication.

‘All it takes is for one of those people in that position of power to say that, and it ripples through. So, yeah, of course I thought that. Of course I thought that in order to be happy, I needed to be straight.’

Eventually he made the decision to be speak publicly about his sexuality after becoming frustrated with the restrictions a closeted public image placed on his personal life.

He said: ‘I reached a point where I thought, “F**k this.” I’d much prefer to hold my boyfriend’s hand in public or be able to put my own face picture on Tinder and not be so concerned about that, than getting a part.’

The actor has since won acclaim for his raunchy Bridgerton role, and with it a sex symbol status that he insists he’s not entirely comfortable with.
