Emergency services descended on Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, after the blaze reportedly broke out at an industrial building this morning. The unit and surrounding buildings have been evacuated.
A huge cloud of smoke can be seen for miles around the market town, Staffordshire Live reports.
One witness said: “My mother-in-law came to our house at 8am today and said ‘have you seen the smoke?’
“It was black and you can really smell it. We saw the smoke out the back and it looked to be coming from the Stafford Street area.
“We have heard sirens. The smoke has just been billowing out.”
It is believed the building in question is on an industrial unit off Derby Road, which is a main route through Burton and particularly busy during rush-hour.
It’s extremely congested today due to the fire, with southbound traffic back to the A38 link near Rolleston-on-Dove, Staffordshire.
Northbound traffic on Derby Road is slow through the centre of the town and back towards the Branston area.
Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue were contacted for comment.
