Calista Flockhart, 57, talks her return to the stage for the first time in 20 years

Calista Flockhart has made her return to the stage for the first time in 20 years.

The 57-year-old actress is starring as Martha in Edward Albee’s critically-acclaimed play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles and she discussed her new role in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.     

‘Whenever I did a play, I was usually the ingénue and one of the youngest people in the cast. And now I’m definitely the oldest person in the cast,’ Calista said.

 She continued, ‘And I am not the ingénue.’

The Illinois native added,  ‘And that’s really fun and exciting. I could never play Martha without all the life experience. So it feels pretty wonderful.’ 

The play, which also star Zachary Quinto, Graham Phillips and Aimee Carrero, began previews on April 19 at the Gil Cates Theatre and will run from April 28 to May 22.

Calista, who shares son Liam, 21, with her husband of 12 years Harrison Ford, 79, decided to resume working in theater after Liam began attending Amherst College in Massachusetts.

‘I love theater,’ she told the LA Times. ‘I love that it’s happening in the moment right in front of your eyes.

‘ I love going to the theater. I love being in a play. I love, obviously, that it’s live.

She added, ‘There’s no editor and it’s an actor’s medium. You’re on the stage, the director’s gone and it’s just very exciting to me.’ 

In 1989, Calista made her theater debut in the play Beside Herself opposite Melissa Joan Hart, at the Circle Repertory Theatre in New York City. She starred  as Laura in the Broadway play The Glass Menagerie in 1994.

She rose to fame when she was cast at the titular role in David E. Kelley’s Fox television series Ally McBeal. Calista went on to win a Golden Globe Award for her role as Ally in 1998 and starred in the show until it was canceled in 2002. 

Ensemble: In 2006, the actress took on the role of Kitty Walker, starring opposite Sally Field, Rachel Griffiths and Matthew Rhys, in the ABC series Brothers & Sisters. The show ran for five years before it was canceled in 2011.

The star appeared in the 2000 film in Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her and the play Bash: Latter-Day Plays later that year. 

Calista also starred in the off-Broadway production of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. 

She has also appeared in The Birdcage (1996), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999), The Last Shot (2004) and Fragile (2005).

Calista was last seen as the Cat Grant, the boss of Kara/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) on the CW show Supergirl from 2015 to 2021.
