Chelsea learn Wesley Fofana return date as injured star needed crutches after AC Milan win

Graham Potter will reportedly have to cope without Wesley Fofana for around four weeks, potentially ruling him out until Chelsea face Arsenal next month. Chelsea spent big money to bring Fofana in from Leicester this past summer after a long transfer saga.

He’s impressed so far under Potter, and got off the mark with his first goal for Chelsea in their 3-0 win over AC Milan on Tuesday. But Fofana was down on the ground clutching at his knee before limping off the field to be replaced by Trevoh Chalobah.

Potter was unable to give an update on Fofana’s condition after the game, stating the defender will go off for a scan. The Chelsea manager said: “We don’t know yet. That’s the one disappointing thing about the evening. We need to scan, and fingers crossed. I wouldn’t want to speculate on it now, but we’re concerned, and we need to wait for tomorrow, get it scanned and hope for the best. It is what it is.

“These things happen. He’s a young guy, a strong guy. We’ll help him, we’ll support him, but at the moment not too much to report.” But the centre-back raised fears the injury may be more severe than first feared after he was seen leaving Stamford Bridge on crutches.

There were even some suggestions that Fofana’s knee injury could see him miss out on the France squad for the 2022 World Cup. However, it’s now been reported that Fofana is set to be back and available in a month.

According to the Telegraph, scan results have shown Fofana only suffered a sprained knee. He’s said to be out for four weeks, ‘but could be back sooner’ in a huge boost to Potter.

DON’T MISS

That likely sees Fofana miss Chelsea’s next eight fixtures with a potential return to the side against Arsenal on November 6. Chelsea will play just two more matches after that before the season takes a break up for the World Cup.

The Blues will face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup third round a few days after their clash with Arsenal before taking on Newcastle in their final game before the World Cup. Fofana is yet to make an appearance for France’s senior side with a host of talented players ahead of him in the queue.

Jules Kounde, Raphael Varane, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano and Benoit Badiashile all appear to be favourites to be on the plane to Qatar, but any injuries could see Fofana given a chance.
