Chris Hemsworth plays a sinister scientist in Netflix prison thriller Spiderhead

Chris Hemsworth plays a sinister scientist in Netflix’s futuristic prison thriller Spiderhead – based on the chilling New Yorker short story

Chris Hemsworth swaps Thor’s hammer for sharp suits and wire-rim spectacles to play a sinister scientist in the upcoming movie Spiderhead.

A trailer for the futuristic sci-fi film, which premieres on Netflix next month, shows the Marvel actor, 38, flexing his acting muscles as his creepy character tests mood-altering drugs on convicts in a state-of-the-art prison complex.

The prisoners have volunteered as medical subjects in order to shorten their sentences.

The film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, told Entertainment Weekly the drugs administered by Hemsworth’s character alter the mood and emotions of the convicts – but not always for the better.

The preview begins with sweeping shots of a tropical island setting before building to a crescendo of sex, violence and horror.

Starting out with a view of the Spiderhead facility, which resembles resort hotel without windows, things soon take a darker turn as the experiments are revealed.

The prisoners wear plainclothes. There are no cells and seemingly no guards either.

‘We’re proud of our work,’ Hemsworth’s character, Dr Steve Absneti, says.

Co-star Miles Teller plays a prisoner, Jeff, who is seen being given drugs through a bizarre device attached to his back.

Later, a clearly disturbed Jeff says: ‘This place can mess with your head.’

Rising star Jurnee Smollett also appears in the trailer, playing a troubled convict.

At one point, as the drug experiment seems to be heading off the rails, Dr Absneti says: ‘Time to worry about crossing lines was a lot of lines ago.’

Written by Rheet Reese and Paul Wernick of Deadpool fame, the film is based on George Saunders’ 2010 New Yorker short story Escape from Spiderhead.
