Cody Simpson has started the year with a bang after splitting from his longtime model girlfriend and flagging his first major swim meet of 2022.
The La Dee Daa singer, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Tuesday, will contest the World Championship trials to be held in Adelaide in April in what will be his first major swim meet since the Olympic trials last year.
It’s understood Simpson will compete in the 50m and 100m fly as well as the 100m freestyle with his best chance to crack the Australian team likely to emerge in his pet event, the 100m fly.

The meet could prove a golden opportunity for Simpson to crack the National team with many of the big-name swimmers sitting out the World Championships (held in Japan in May) in favour of staying fresh for the Commonwealth Games in August.
It comes as friends close to the singer-turned-swimmer confirm Simpson and his Belgian-born American model girlfriend Marloes Stevens have called it quits.
Sources close to the couple say that Simpson’s dedication to his swimming career ultimately took precedence over his personal life, with Stevens also said to be homesick for her native Los Angeles.
However Stevens, who returned to the US in mid-November, has alluded to a not-so-amicable break-up with a series of cryptic messages on Instagram.
Happier times: Simpson and Stevens rocketed to glamour-couple status back in 2020 when they hooked up in the wake of Simpson’s high-profile split from Miley Cyrus
One note, posted on Simpson’s birthday, read: ‘Fall in love with someone who will take care of you – not in a materialistic way, but rather, fall in love with someone who will take care of your soul’.

Simpson is set to release new music on January 25 with the Gold Coaster confirming to Billboard.com this week that ‘some’ of the tracks on his fourth studio album could be about his one-year whirlwind romance with the Midnight Sky singer.
‘At this age, for me, these things mean a lot,’ Simpson told the publication. ‘It’s a great source of inspiration.’
‘I think there’s a couple [of songs] inspired by a few different relationships I’ve had,’ he added.

Remaining focussed: Cody Simpson is preparing to contest the World Championship trials in April
It’s not the first time Simpson has drawn creative inspiration from his relationships.
In 2019, he penned the single Golden Thing about his relationship with Cyrus.
Meanwhile, eagle-eyed fans have noted in the weeks following his split from Stevens Simpson has been been spending a lot of time with good friend and former Australian national team swimmer Georgia Bohl.
Bohl, who is the daughter of Simpson’s coach Michael Bohl, made special mention of Simpson on Tuesday, posting a birthday tribute to her own Instagram: ‘Happy quarter cent. Thank you for being in my life’ coupled with a love heart emoji.
Just friends? Georgia Bohl’s father shot down romance rumours. ‘They’re great friends, he said

However, Michael Bohl shot down the rumours this week telling Daily Mail Australia that his daughter and Simpson were just ‘very close friends’.
‘They have known each other a very long time but no, they’re not dating,’ Bohl said.
‘Georgia is very single and very happy being so I believe.
‘She and Cody have known each other for a long time and they’ve been friends for a long time but there’s nothing happening beyond that.’
Training: Simpson gets direction from coach and mentor Michael Bohl
Bohl also confirmed that Simpson is ‘looking good’ for his tilt at the upcoming World Championship trials.
‘He’s training really well and looking good. He has a bit of shoulder issue that is giving him some grief but that’s generally the case with all sprinters,’ Bohl added.
Simpson is a part of one of Australia’s most powerhouse swim squads which also counts Olympic megastar Emma McKeon and Mack Horton in its stable.
