Demi Lovato will discuss her near-fatal overdose in a new YouTube docuseries

The first two episodes will premiere for free on 23 March via Lovato’s YouTube channel, and the remaining episodes will roll out on a weekly basis for the next two Tuesdays.

Directed by Michael D Ratner, Dancing With the Devil will follow the 28-year-old singer through the last three years of her life and career, with production starting in 2018 during the singer’s ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ world tour.

Describing the film’s story, a press release states that Dancing With the Devil will take “an honest look back at some of the most trying times in Lovato’s life as she unearths her prior traumas and discovers the importance of her physical, emotional, and mental health”.

In a statement to Rolling Stone, Lovato shared how she felt ready to discuss “the darkest point in my life”.

“It’s been two years since I came face-to-face with the darkest point in my life, and now I’m ready to share my story with the world. For the first time, you’ll be able to see my chronicle of struggle and ongoing healing from my point of view.  I’m grateful that I was able to take this journey to face my past head-on and finally share it with the world.”

Ratner also spoke about how the docuseries would “provide a real window into the life of one of the biggest stars in the world”.

“Demi’s willingness to explore the darkest elements of her life is going to leave the audience with a complete understanding of everything she’s been through and ultimately where she is going,” he said. “Demi stands for empowerment, and this documentary is going to answer the many questions that have been out there – providing a real window into the life of one of the biggest stars in the world, who is simply a human being.”

Lovato has long been open about her struggles with sobriety and mental health. In July 2018, the pop performer was rushed to the hospital after suffering “complications” from a reported overdose.

“I now need time to focus on my sobriety and road to recovery,” she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post. “The love you all have shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out of this on the other side.”
