'Don't mind being called Tory scum' Jacob Rees-Mogg dismisses conference protesters

Jacob Rees-Mogg has dismissed hecklers who shouted “Tory scum” at him as he made his way to the party’s conference in Birmingham. He instead praised their right to peacefully protest as “marvellous”.

Despite being accompanied by a police escort, the MP for North East Somerset seemed unfazed as protesters hurled insults at him.

Speaking at the convention on Monday night, Mr Rees-Mogg referred to the reception as a “warm welcome” and claimed not to mind the heckling.

He told the crowd: “I want to thank you for giving me almost as warm a welcome as I got outside the hall.

“That’s rather marvellous, having a democracy where you can walk through the streets and people can exercise their rights to peaceful protest.”

He added: “If people really want to call me Tory scum, I don’t mind.”

While speaking to Sky News on Sunday he made similar comments: “There have been protests at Tory conferences since time immemorial, it’s nothing new.

“It’s a fact of democracy. They’re shouting but it’s perfectly peaceful.

Mr Fabricant said: “Social media is suggesting I was “attacked” as I tried to get into #CPC2022. I was not.

“I was directed wrongly right into the middle of the protest. I think the protesters thought I was deliberately provoking them.

“But no one touched me. Just shouted abuse. They were just loud!”
