Downton’s Michelle Dockery steps out of London hotel in chic double denim as Claire Foy also signals the style’s strong comeback by matching blue jeans with a denim jacket
Good heavens, Carson, is that Lady Mary flaunting her fashion-forward style credentials by stepping out in chic double denim?
It’s certainly a bold look for Downton star Michelle Dockery, who’s ditched her character’s flapper dress.
Although the outfit might appal Downton Abbey butler Carson, it will win approval from Claire Foy, who played the Queen in The Crown.
Chic: Good heavens, Carson, is that Lady Mary flaunting her fashion-forward style credentials by stepping out in chic double denim?
She recently signalled the style’s strong comeback by matching blue jeans with a belted denim jacket.
Ms Dockery, who stars in the recent Netflix political thriller Anatomy Of A Scandal, was seen emerging from the Corinthia Hotel in central London yesterday in her all-blue ensemble.
Days earlier, Ms Foy, 38, chose a similar look in New York during a US promotional tour for A Very British Scandal, the Amazon series dramatising the stormy marriage and divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll.

With her shirt daringly open, Ms Dockery, 40, was dressed for comfort. A passerby said: ‘She looked terrific and certainly stood out from the crowd dressed all in blue. There’s no way you’d miss her. She looked a very stylish woman with somewhere to go.’
The double-denim trend, once regarded as a crime against fashion, is firmly back in favour among confident female celebrities.
A host of stars have helped revive the style recently, including Ms Dockery’s Anatomy Of A Scandal co-star Sienna Miller, who was photographed in New York wearing slouchy denim jeans with a dark denim shirt.
TV host Stacey Dooley was pictured in jeans and a denim jacket, supermodel Naomi Campbell hit the red carpet in a dark double-denim suit, and singer Dua Lipa caused a social media storm with a 90s look in low-rise jeans with a denim halter-neck.
But beware, it’s a disaster for men
To double denim or not to double denim – it’s the style question that divides the sexes.
While fashionistas are firmly in favour of denimed females, men are far more likely to commit a Shakin’ Stevens-style faux pas.
Couple goals: It is more than two decades since singers Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears sported double-denim ensembles at the American Music Awards in 2001
It is more than two decades since singers Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears sported double-denim ensembles at the American Music Awards in 2001, but few who saw them can forget the fashion horror show.
The pair – the hottest couple in showbusiness at the time – turned up in co-ordinated chambray, with Timberlake in a denim suit and matching cowboy hat while Spears wore a strapless denim ballgown.
Timberlake said last year: ‘There was maybe a period where I could skip over some of the outfits that were public, but the internet will never. You do a lot of things when you’re young and in love.’
Musician John Legend told him: ‘Denim on denim on denim on denim – that will never be forgotten.’
Although few men go for the double-denim look, one celebrity exception was rapper Kayne West at Paris Fashion Week in January.
However, this was the man who also wore a black leather suit and matching balaclava later that week.
