E10 fuel branded a 'total scam' as drivers feel 'conned' by new eco-friendly petrol

Twitter accounts have attacked the new compound in recent days with many claiming the new petrol is to blame for rising fuel costs. Others have also reported fuel efficiency issues with the new fuel with one road user claiming to have lost almost 20 miles per gallon.

Petrol prices hit a new record last week with costs reaching 148.02p per litre on average.

These figures exceeded the previous all-time high of 147.72p per litre in November.

Twitter user ‘Catbaba’ said: “New E10 fuel is definitely less efficient than E5.

“The difference is more noticeable if you have a hybrid car that doesn’t run the engine idle as much.”

The compound is expected to reduce CO2 emissions y around 750,000 tonnes, the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road in one go.

However, it is expected around 600,000 cars are incompatible with the new compound.

The RAC has previously warned drivers who use the new fuel will also be getting “fewer miles to the gallon”.

They said this was because E10 was “less efficient” than E5 fuel as it contained more ethanol.
