‘Beloved and iconic comedian Gilbert Gottfried passed away at 2:35 p.m. ET on April 12, 2022, from Recurrent Ventricular Tachycardia due to Myotonic Dystrophy type II,’ Schwartz said.

Gottfried chat with The Associated Press in March following Smith’s slap of Rock, saying the incident was a serious matter, while cracking jokes about the incident.

The comic said that prior to performing he ‘just had to worry about wearing a mask,’ alluding to the coronavirus.

‘Now I have to worry about wearing a football helmet,’ Gottfried said, adding, ‘If Will Smith is reading this, dear God, please don’t come to my shows.’

Gottfried’s death is the latest premature passing to hit the comedy community within the last seven months, following the passing of Norm Macdonald at 61 in September of 2021; Bob Saget at 65 in January, and Louie Anderson at 68 later that month.
