Gunna pulls off a SHOCKING upset over The Weeknd on the Billboard album charts

Rapper Gunna pulled off quite the surprising upset by beating out The Weeknd’s highly-anticipated album on the Billboard 200 album charts.

Both Gunna’s album, DS4Ever, and The Weeknd’s Dawn FM, debuted on January 7, with both artists giving fans less than a week of advanced notice of the album’s release, with no physical CD copies available for several weeks.

Gunna’s album debuted with 150,300 equivalent album units, just barely beating out The Weeknd’s Dawn FM, which tallied 148,000 equivalent album units.

Each equivalent album unit is comprised of album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

One equivalent album unit is equal to one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, 3,750 ad-supported audio streams or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams of songs from an album.

Gunna’s 19-track DS4Ever featured a star-studded list of collaborators including 21 Savage, Chris Brown, Future, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch and Young Thug.

The #1 debut is Gunna’s second album in a row to debut atop the album charts following his last release, 2020’s Wunna.

DS4Ever’s 150,300 equivalent album units come from 144,600 SEA units (193.5 million on-demand official streams), 4,700 album sales and 1,000 TEA units.

DS4Ever’s deluxe edition with four bonus tracks dropped on January 11 but it was pulled the same day, with a 20-track edition including P Power featuring Drake, released on January 13.

Both DS4Ever and Dawn FM likely benefited from a rather cost-effective price point, with iTunes selling DS4Ever at $7.99 and Gunna’s official store selling it for $4.

Dawn FM was sold for $3.49 on The Weeknd’s website with Apple selling it for $7.99, with a ‘digitally signed’ version going for $5.

Dawn FM’s 148,000 equivalent album units include 131,300 SEA units (173.04 million on-demand official streams), 14,800 album sales and 1,900 TEA units.

A physical CD edition of Gunna’s DS4Ever is said to debut either in late February or early March, though it did have a limited release during its launch week, including Gunna’s in-store appearance at Rough Trade in New York City.

The CD version of Dawn FM will be released on January 28, with vinyl LP and cassette editions debuting on April 29.

Last week’s number 1 album, the Encanto soundtrack, dropped to third place, with the top 10 rounded out by Adele’s 30, Morgen Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album, The Weeknd’s compilation The Highlights, Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour, Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, Doja Cat’s Planet Her and Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version).
