Hacks' second season teaser reveals Deborah and Ava hitting the road for contentious comedy tour

On Thursday, HBO Max unveiled the first teaser for the eight-episode second season of Hacks, which premieres on May 12.

The 40-second preview begins with legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) driving through the desert with her young writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) to Mama Cass’ 1969 song Make Your Own Kind of Music.

Ava had agreed to join Deborah on the road as she workshops new stand-up comedy material following the end of her long-running residency at the Palmetto Casino in Las Vegas.

The first trailer for the sophomore season shows the polar opposites – who have a 44-year age gap – dumpster diving for what appears to be some sort of cup.

There’s also a shot of the pair riding in a boat while wearing matching life preservers.

Daniels – who’s a lesbian – strips down for bikini-clad fun with several ladies at a party.

And Vance looks less than thrilled shilling patterned socks on a QVC-type shopping network.

At one point, Deborah could be seen violently hurling objects at Ava – whom she slapped in the season one finale – while inside a boutique full of geodes, crystals, and new age knickknacks.

Perhaps Vance finally discovers that Daniels sent a ‘very intense and revealing’ revenge-fueled email to the British B**** PM writers full of dirt about her boss last season.

‘Concerning how far they’ve come, the idea that there’s something floating out there that fully will disrupt that equilibrium of peacefulness and happiness is something that Ava’s going to have to deal with in a major way,’ Hacks creator Lucia Aniello told EW last June.

‘And you know, I think that it’s especially heartbreaking too, for Deborah to go to the funeral, to put herself out there to say, “You’re too good.” And I want her to come out on the road.

‘For her to do all of that – somebody who says “I’ll never go to a funeral” – for her to say, “Never forgive, never forget” and yet still go to those lengths for Ava in the finale to learn ultimately at some point that she sold her out? I can only imagine that will feel very devastating.’

Aniello co-created the Emmy-winning, critically-acclaimed dramedy about the dark mentorship alongside Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky.

The new teaser ended with Ava looking really happy with herself as Deborah utters: ‘You’re welcome.’

The stakes are higher as the 70-year-old Designing Women alum famously won an Emmy Award, SAG Award, and Critics’ Choice Award for her fierce portrayal of Vance.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old Emmy nominee is famously the daughter of SNL veteran Laraine Newman.

Also returning for the second season are Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Jane Adams, Christopher McDonald, Kaitlin Olson, Paul W. Downs, Poppy Liu, Rose Abdoo, Mark Indelicato, and Meg Stalter.

Laurie Metcalf, Ming-Na Wen, Martha Kelly, and Susie Essman joined season two in recurring roles while Margaret Cho and Devon Sawa will serve as guest stars.

HBO Max will air two new episodes of Hacks each week, concluding with the season finale on June 2.
