Hairy Biker Dave Myers says cancer treatment is working but has caused 'sore eyes' and loss of taste

‘When I get through this I’ll never whinge again’: Hairy Biker Dave Myers says his cancer treatment is working but has caused ‘sore eyes’ due to lashes falling out and loss of taste

Hairy Biker Dave Myers has revealed for the first time that the chemotherapy treating his cancer is working.

The TV chef, 64, who went public with his cancer diagnosis in May, says his treatment has left him with ‘sore eyes’ because his lashes have fallen out and it’s also affected his taste and smell.

However, Dave has admitted he’s developed an unlikely craving for cottage pie and Vimto, after last enjoying the soft drink when he was a child.

He explained: ‘At the minute I’m going through treatment for cancer and it’s like another chapter.

‘I went to the doctors complaining of certain bits and bobs and the next thing I know I got a phone and told it’s a tumour and I’m going to have chemotherapy.

‘Fortunately, the chemo is working but it’s the effect chemotherapy has on you. Everyday is a school day.

‘My eyes are sore because my eyelashes have fallen out – it’s crap like that that’s really irritating.

‘But I’m getting there. I’ve got to go in tomorrow for another lot. I’m just getting through it.’

The podcaster, who’s chosen not to reveal the type of cancer he has, vowed he will ‘never whinge again about anything’ once he’s recovered from the illness.

He added: ‘I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. But when I get through this, I’ll never whinge again about anything. I’m going to embrace life and everything it’s got to offer.

‘I can’t eat garlic at the minute, smells are really acute, it’s all gone belly up. I’m told it will come back.’

Dave married Lily in 2011 after the pair met while he was filming The Hairy Bikers in Romania and said since his cancer diagnosis, he struggles to enjoy a glass of wine with his wife, opting for a drink favoured by children instead.

He explained: ‘I’ve got a craving for cottage pie and Vimto. Lil’s sitting down with a nice glass of Burgundy, and I’ve got a pint of Vimto. Last time I had Vimto was when I was eight.’

Dave was speaking about his medical condition on Kate Thornton’s podcast White Wine Question Time alongside his Hairy Biker other half, Si King, 55, who admitted it has been ‘tough’ seeing his friend go through this.

Si said: ‘It’s hard seeing someone you love in those trenches. It really is tough. He’s as tough as an old boot, which is what we’re all relying on. He’s as hard as nails.’

In May, Dave made light of his cancer diagnosis, saying he’ll be a ‘baldy biker’ for a while – but he suits having no hair.

He said: ‘I may be a baldy biker for a while so it’s just a warning, I don’t want to make a fuss about it, I look alright bald actually.’

The former Strictly contestant, who said in May ‘I don’t want to hide under a rock’, was last seen in public last month alongside Si, where he waved and smiled to photographers.
