Hollyoaks SPOILER: Luke Morgan dies in tragic scenes as he falls off a cliff amid dementia battle

Luke Morgan tragically died after falling off a cliff in emotional scenes during Monday night’s hour-long Hollyoaks special set in Mallorca.

In the heartbreaking first-look episode on E4, the character, whose condition has been rapidly deteriorating in recent months following his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis in December 2019, was seen sharing a toast with his fiancée Cindy Cunningham ahead of their wedding.

But the romantic moment at the scenic location soon turned to tragedy when Luke (played by Gary Lucy) became confused and dropped Cindy’s ring, causing him to loose his footing at the cliff edge.

The touching scenes show Luke’s final moments as he falls over the edge, with his bride and loved ones rushing over before realising it’s too late to save him.

With Luke gone, a series of flashbacks then revisits the character’s time in Hollyoaks village over the years, with the Luke first appearing in the Channel 4 soap back in 1999.

Following the tear-jerking episode, actor Gary, 40, appeared in a brand new video filmed in Mallorca in which he recalls his best moments during his time on the show.

The interview sees the soap star recall his career highlights including attending his  first British Soap Awards in 1999 in which he won Hollyoaks’ first ever award for Best Newcomer.

The award came amid much acclaim from Luke’s male rape storyline, which made history as it was the first time the issue was tackled in a UK soap.

Gary’s interview, which is shown on Hollyoaks’ social media platforms, also saw the actor open up on his recent on-screen relationship with co-star Stephanie Waring, as well as the friendships he’s made both on and off the screen.

A flashforward scene that aired in March, revealed that Luke will pass away from frontotemporal dementia, after being diagnosed two years ago.

He told Digital Spy: ‘I came back in under Brian Kirkwood, when he wanted to revive Luke and bring him back in to explore the effects of not having dealt with such a traumatic event with the male rape. So I came back in for a short period in between doing the Full Monty tour, and then afterwards he said, “I’d love to have you back again, would you consider it?”

‘I said I’d absolutely love to and so we talked about it, and basically I suggested a young dementia story – frontotemporal dementia is the medical term for it.

‘It had never been done before and that is what Hollyoaks is all about. It is leading the pack in regards to groundbreaking and heavy stories. Luke’s male rape being another one obviously back in the day, which was huge and so important. This was a great opportunity to come back and to ultimately finish with another story that is a first basically – young dementia, especially.’

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes on E4 at 7pm.
