An 11-month-old baby and three-year-old boy died after being stabbed “multiple” times in a US apartment, according to police. The mother of the two brothers was taken into custody and is being held as a “person of interest”, officers said.
The brothers were found unresponsive with “multiple stab wounds” to their necks and torsos submerged underwater in a tub at an apartment building in the Bronx, New York.
The New York Police Department said the incident on Saturday at around 8pm, with the two children rushed to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
Both the baby and toddler tragically died due to their injuries, but an official cause of death has not been established.
City records say the Bronx apartment is listed as a family shelter.
A 24-year-old woman, reported to be the children’s mother, has now been taken into custody by police.
At a press conference, NYPD Deputy Chief Louis Deceglie told reporters the force responded to a call at around 7.30pm (12.30am GMT).
Mr Deceglie said around half an hour later a second emergency call was taken, adding: “A second 911 call was received reporting to unresponsive babies not breathing at the same location.
“Patrol officers returned to the apartment, where they found an 11-month-old baby boy and a three-year-old male unresponsive with stab wounds, multiple stab wounds.”
