Inside Sunninghill: Fergie & Andrew’s first home worth £15million – ‘looked like a Tesco!'

Other royals have been gifted properties following their marriage, such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who were given Frogmore Cottage, built in 1801.

However Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s wedding gift from the Queen was a brand new property.

This Ascot property was built in 1987 one year after the Duke and Duchess of York were married.

This royal property then became the first home to be built in the Elizabethan age of Queen Elizabeth II.

The royal residence in Ascot was named Sunninghill Park, and it was to be Andrew and Sarah’s first marital home.

The property, which was later demolished in 2016, featured an impressive 12 bedrooms, and it went on to sell for £15million.

According to planning documents from 1987, the main building was red brick with stone cladding to create “a modern interpretation of a county house”.

The property also had a number of outbuildings.

Other features outdoors included a children’s play area, tennis courts and a stunning fountain.

Inside the home was complete with a gym, a games room and a library.

Andrew and Sarah spent a large amount of time raising their two children there, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

In ‘The Royal Wives of Windsor’, a documentary released in 2018, royal commentators discussed Sunninghill and the critics perception of the home back in the 1980s.

Penny Junor, a royal biographer, said: “Andrew and Fergie built themselves a very grand house called Sunninghill.

He bought the house with the intention to renovate it entirely as his own, but it was only in 2015, nine years after purchasing the home, that the works started.

According to planning documents, he installed six en-suite bedrooms and eight staff bedrooms, a living room, a drawing room, casual and formal dining rooms, a study, and sitting rooms for the children, and the master suite.

Outside, Timur removed the outdoor pool in favour of an indoor one.

He also had a walled kitchen garden built, and the grounds completely relandscaped to include a wild woodland area and orchard.

The home is located nearby to Royal Lodge in Windsor, where Sarah and Andrew now reside in separate buildings.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie also lived at the Royal Lodge after moving there in 2006 with their mother.
