A grieving Jimmy Barnes loses three loved ones in the space of two weeks but vows to celebrate their lives: ‘I don’t want to be depressed’

Jimmy Barnes farewelled his sister, his mother-in-law, and a close friend in May, all the space of two weeks.

And in an interview with The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, the legendary rocker says he wants to celebrate the lives of his lost loved ones as he sets out on his Soul Deep 30 anniversary tour, which starts next week.

‘I don’t want to be depressed,’ Jimmy, 66, said.

‘I need to go out and celebrate life and celebrate music and soul and that’s what family’s about.’

In May, Jimmy lost Kusumphorn Visuthipol, the mother of his wife Jane, not long after the singer announced the death of his sister, Linda Barnes on May 12.

On May 30, Jimmy farewelled recording industry executive and close friend Warren Costello, long time managing director of the Mushroom Group.

‘I spoke to Warren every f**king day for 35 years,’ Jimmy said. ‘And I was in the room when he drew his last breath.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Jimmy, who has undergone therapy, talked about the importance of not letting his mourning trigger depression.

He said that he wanted to be celebrating the people that meant so much to him – not locked away in mourning.

The Cold Chisel founding member was touched by the support of fans and followers after experiencing what he called a ‘tough and overwhelming week,’ when his sister Linda passed away.

Jimmy has not publicly shared Linda’s cause of death, however his brother John Swan revealed on Facebook on Friday that she had Multiple Sclerosis.

‘Thank you for all your messages of condolence for my beautiful sister Linda’s passing,’ the Scottish-born Australian artist wrote alongside a photo of himself holding a vase of flowers.

Jimmy Barnes’ mother-in-law died only days after the rocker cancelled a series of shows due to ‘a very grave illness in the family’.

‘Our families lives were all made richer because of this beautiful woman,’ Jimmy posted sharing the sad news on Instagram.

‘Jane, myself and our kids now all need to be together elsewhere over the coming days as we all say an unexpected goodbye to someone we love,’ Barnes tweeted on May 24.

‘This decision was not taken lightly but we trust people will understand that at times like this, family really must come first.’

Jimmy and Jane married in 1981, and have four children – son, Jackie, and daughters, Mahalia, Eliza-Jane and Elly-May. He is also father to son David Campbell.
