Today host Karl Stefanovic reveals the VERY crude nickname he was bullied with in high school: ‘It took them two years to come up with it’

Karl Stefanovic might be one of Australia’s most prolific TV stars, being the host of the Today show for years.

But on the 3pm Pick Up on Thursday, Karl revealed that he was once bullied in high school and given a rather crude nickname by his peers.

The 47-year-old said bullies took two years to come up with a name that rhymed with his surname and came up with ‘Karl step-on-my-d**k’.

Karl’s admission came as he was introduced on the show by Kate Langbroek.

‘He’s Stefanovic and he’s so golden and Monty loves him,’ Kate sang as Karl called into the show.

He remarked: ‘It’s not an easy name to rhyme with and when I was in high school they used to call me Karl step-on-my-d**k.’

‘It took them like two years before they came up with that… it was a Queensland thing, rhyming with the surname.’

Although now based in Sydney where he co-hosts the Today show, Karl grew up in Queensland.

He went to St Augustines College in Cairns and the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane for high school.

It comes after he and Today co-host Ally Langdon told Kyle and Jackie O on Wednesday that they aren’t worried about the show’s ratings despite sliding to third place behind ABC News Breakfast and Sunrise earlier this month.

The pair said it’s normal for ratings to go up and down, and one bad week isn’t anything to panic about.

Karl also said it wasn’t a surprise to see the ABC surge to second place during an election campaign given the public broadcaster’s reputation for hard news.

‘If the ABC isn’t having a good time during the elections then they have got serious problems. We love what we are doing and we are committed to doing a great show for our viewers,’ he told radio hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson.

‘There is no doubt that what we are doing now is better than it has been the last few years,’ he continued.

Nine’s Today show suffered a blow earlier this month when it placed third behind Sunrise and ABC News Breakfast for a whole week for the first time in 13 years.

Today’s metro average for the week commencing May 2 was 176,000.

By contrast, Channel Seven’s Sunrise pulled in 241,000 metro viewers followed by ABC News Breakfast with 195,000 viewers.
