M1 traffic chaos: Massive delays after five-car crash causes mayhem on busy route

Hertfordshire police officers are currently dealing with a five-car collision on the M1 northbound at Junction 8. While the road has reopened after closing earlier today, there remains significant congestion. Motorists are advised to find an alternative route. The accident, reported at around 4pm, has held traffic in all four lanes.

INRIX also reports there is congestion to junction 6A at the M25 interchange.

As of 5.10pm, all lanes have re-opened. However, congestion remains in place at J6A at the M25 interchange and long delays are ongoing.

AA traffic says: “Severe delays of 39 minutes and delays increasing on M1 Northbound between J6 A405 North Orbital Road (North Watford / Bricket Wood) and M1 (Toddington Services).

“Average speed five mph.”

The crash follows a tragic accident on the M1 involving two vans and a lorry last week that took the lives of two people – both pronounced dead at the scene.

It happened between junctions 26 and 25 in Bulwell, Nottingham.

Sergeant Steve Waft, of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Two men sadly lost their lives following this tragic incident and their families have now been informed.

“Our thoughts are firmly with their families and friends and specially trained officers are working with them and providing support during this extremely difficult time.

“We would continue to urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any dash-cam footage to get in touch on 101, quoting incident number 34 of 20 January 2022.”
