Madeleine McCann suspect issued arrest warrant over separate child abuse case

A German court in the town of Braunschweig issued a warrant for the arrest of Christian B, a convicted drug dealer and sex offender. The 45-year-old, who is already serving a seven-year sentence for rape in a different case, is wanted on five counts of sexual assault. Prosecutors believe he is culpable of the murder of British toddler Madeline McCann and fear there is a high risk that he would seek to flee or commit similar offences when he is due for relese in September 2025.

The charges in question took place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.

In three of the alleged crimes, the suspect is accused of abducting and raping his victims, while in the other he allegedly exposed himself to very young children.

The arrest warrant must still be approved by authorities in Italy, where he was arrested in 2018 before being extradited to Germany.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from an apartment block in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz in 2007, while her parents dined with friends at a nearby tapas bar, but her body has never been found.

At the time of her disappearance, Christian B, a drifter who had lived in several parts of Germany, was living in a camper van near to the Praia da Luz holiday resort.

He first came to the attention of the authorities regarding Madeleine’s disappearance was in 2017, after he allegedly told a friend he “knew all about” what had happened to her.

After years without progress in the case, German prosecutors made the shock announcement in 2020 that they had identified a suspect.

Christian B has denied any involvement in her disappearance.
