Man Utd give Raphael Varane injury update as Erik ten Hag rules three stars out vs Everton

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane could be fit to face Everton in the Premier League on Sunday as the Red Devils look to make amends for their 6-3 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City last time out. But Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek have been ruled out of the clash.

Varane started his side’s defeat to City but was forced off with an ankle injury five minutes before the break. He then missed United’s Europa League victory over Omonia Nicosia on Thursday night.

Maguire, meanwhile, is suffering with a hamstring problem he sustained playing for England against Germany in the Nations League. And Wan-Bissaka and Van de Beek haven’t featured since the Red Devils beat Liverpool in August.

Ten Hag will be desperate for his side to pick up three points against the Toffees. And ahead of the match he gave an update on the availability of his players. “Varane has made progress and I hope he’s available, but I think it will be close,” the Dutchman admitted. “From the other players, Harry Maguire is not, then it’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek – both are also not available.”

“We have to improve every day but also sometimes you fall back and then you have to get up again,” the 52-year-old said. “And that is what I demand from my squad. And so we have to carry on and every time learn the lessons and give the maximum – because only good for me is good enough. And at this moment, by far, we are not that good.

“We have seen on Sunday and we have to do much better. I think the main problem is, and that is what we did in games before much better, intensity. We have to bring every game the intensity on the pitch. That was the big difference between City and us, so that is the demand to our squad, to all of our players – you have to take responsibility for that.”
