Met Office warning: England braced for travel chaos as snow and hail showers blast nation

The Met Office issued a yellow warning on Thursday for ice in the East of England, where snow and hail could cause travel disruption and higher risk of accidents.

Heavy snowfall was expected in the hillier areas of northeast England as well as eastern Scotland.

The Met Office said members of the public should plan ahead for travel disruption.

The yellow weather warning will remain in place until mid-morning on Thursday.

Areas in Scotland, the East Midlands, Northeast England and the Yorkshire and Humber are all expected to be affected.

The Met Office said: “Further wintry showers overnight Wednesday and early Thursday may lead to fairly widespread icy patches, particularly on untreated surfaces.

“Some accumulations of snow are also possible, particularly across eastern Scotland and hillier areas of northeast England.

“1-2 cm accumulations are possible mainly above 100 m, with 5 cm over parts of Scotland, Northumberland and the North York Moors above 200-300 m.”
