Miquita Oliver reveals Popworld co-host Simon Amstell isn't interested in a TV reunion

Miquita Oliver has revealed that her Popworld co-host Simon Amstell isn’t interested in a TV reunion with her and that he told her he ‘wouldn’t work with her again’.

The presenter, 38, rose to fame at the young age of 16 on the popular Channel 4 show alongside Simon, 42, from 2001 to 2006, but her hopes of recreating their on-screen magic have been dashed.

While they enjoyed many laughs on their hugely-popular show, they are also bonded by trauma, having both nearly died during the 2004 tsunami while holidaying in Thailand together.

The pair got separated running away and thought each other had died before eventually being reunited.

Speaking about if she wanted to rekindle their TV bond in a come back, she told Ok! Magazine: ‘I’ve tried! But Simon will not work with me again. I don’t know why.

‘He’s like ‘it was brilliant but let’s just leave it there’.’ And I’m like ‘Yeah… but we were so good’.’

‘So for now I’ll just have to be happy having him as my friend. He’s a very very important person in my life, but I’m not sure the TV reunion is going to happen.’

The star also chatted about their ‘surreal’ near-death experience while on a trip away, saying that it was an ‘earth-shattering’ and ‘terrifying’.

In 2004 a huge 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries.

She said it was ‘absolutely horrendous’ and that Simon tried to make jokes about it too soon after it had happened, which made her feel uncomfortable.

Miquita then went on to present on T4 from 2006 to 2010, as well as having her own show, The Month With Miquita, on 4Music.

But after her sharp rise to fame at 16 she told how she ended up burnt out at the age of just 26 and in 2012 filed for bankruptcy over an unpaid tax bill.

She continued: ‘I was also one of few people of colour on TV back then and my body anxiety was compounded by self-loathing about being black.

‘I cut off my curls and got hair extensions because I felt they made me look more acceptable – more white. I just wasn’t very comfortable being a mixed-race woman.’
