‘MPs have made up their mind!’ Amber Rudd says Boris ‘can’t survive’ after partygate

She said: “I think he’ll be thinking strategically about what the next move should be in order to survive this particular difficulty.”

Host Robert Peston interjected and asked if Mr Johnson could survive.

In response Ms Rudd said that the process was being dragged out by the various reports of lockdown breaking social gatherings in Downing Street but that he couldn’t stay.

She said: “I don’t think he can.

“I think in his shoes he should be thinking for instance should he be calling that no confidence vote now.

“A lot of Conservative MPs are saying we’re going to wait for Sue Gray part 2 or we’re going to wait for the Met report.

“Most people have already made up their mind.

“I think MPs kind of have made up their mind but are waiting because they are allowed to wait.

“So I think Boris Johnson will be thinking as well about whether he should bring forward that no confidence vote.”

Fifty-four Conservative MPs need to submit letters of no confidence to Sir Graham Brady, Chair of the 1922 Committee of backbenchers, in order to trigger a vote of no confidence.

Seven MPs have publicly confirmed that they have submitted letters including Brexiteer Andrew Bridgen and Thatcher era veteran Sir Roger Gale.

If a vote of no confidence is called over 50 percent of MPs will have to vote ‘no confidence’ for him to be ousted as leader and Prime Minister.
