Greater Manchester’s Clean Air Zone is set to launch on May 30, introducing fees for many petrol and diesel drivers. Although private cars and motorbikes will not face charges, many HGVS, vans and private hire vehicles will face costs.
However, Conservative Councillor Nathan Evans, leader of Trafford Conservatives said they were “disappointed” the scheme had not been scrapped.
He warned the road fees will “adversely impact” many hard-working local residents.
His comments come just days after leaders in Greater Manchester have called for the second phase of funding to be put on hold after concerns about the availability of new models.
It means owners of Lower Goods Vehicles such as vans may be unable to receive funding towards a new vehicle.

Paul Sanders, councillor for the party, said: Financial packages for affected vehicle owners are not sufficient, support and communication is extremely lacking and the time left for affected vehicle owners to upgrade or source compliant vehicles (situation made all the worse by Covid impact) is inadequate.
“The Clean Air Zone in its current form is unfairly hitting fellow hard-working residents and businesses whose households and pockets are already financially stretched.”
The charging zone is launching after the Government issued a legal direction requiring Category C charging in the city back in March 2020.
