Newcastle could look at three cheap centre-backs as Diego Carlos Plan B after Sevilla snub

Newcastle could open talks with three cheaper options at centre-back if they fail in their bid to sign Diego Carlos. Sevilla are standing firm in their valuation of the Brazilian.

Newcastle have been left frustrated by the lack of progress made on a deal to sign Sevilla star Carlos, who has been priced at £40m.

The Magpies are wary of being used for their large swathes of cash while also believing that the Brazilian is not worth that much.

The 29-year-old is desperate to move to St James’ Park as Eddie Howe ramps up his efforts to bolster his squad as he looks to stave off relegation.

The Magpies are 18th in the table after beating Leeds United 1-0 at the weekend – just their second victory in the Premier League – but have signed just Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

While they have been two fine acquisitions, the priority position at centre-back is yet to be addressed – so who could Newcastle turn to instead?

James Tarkowski

Burnley might not like the idea of losing both their top centre-back and striker to the same team in the same transfer window – especially their relegation rivals.

But the Clarets might have to suck it up or lose Tarkowski for nothing with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

While the price will be much lower than the £50m they demanded back in 2020, it will still be a considerable amount more than the fat zero that they will receive in the summer.

Nathan Ake

Howe could eye a potential reunion with Ake, who worked under the manager at Bournemouth where he played so well it convinced Manchester City to shell out over £40m for his services.

However, it has not quite worked for the Dutchman at the Etihad and a loan might be the best option for all parties after he dropped to fourth-choice under Pep Guardiola.

The Catalan coach would be reluctant to see his squad trimmed but for the sake of Ake’s career, he should pursue an exit.

Dan-Axel Zagadou

Dortmund star Zagadou fits the exact kind of bill of defender that Newcastle need – quick, comfortable on the ball, physical and immensely talented.

There is a bonus too in the fact that he is left-footed, allowing the Magpies more passing options from the back.

The 22-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season but his injury record might put Howe off.
