'No bargaining!' North Korea introduces 'irreversible' nuclear weapons policy

Pyongyang has moved to strengthen its nuclear weapons policy in a move which Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un said makes its nuclear status “irreversible”. The legislation will also prevent any denuclearisation talks, state media reported on Friday.

State news agency KCNA has claimed North Korea’s parliament passed the law on Thursday.

Kim said in a speech to the assembly: “The utmost significance of legislating nuclear weapons policy is to draw an irretrievable line so that there can be no bargaining over our nuclear weapons.”

However, the move comes as experts warn North Korea looks set to restart nuclear testing.

Resuming tests would see Pyongyang demonstrate the power of its nuclear arsenal in such a way for the first time since 2017.

Historic summits with ex-US President Donald Trump and other world leaders in 2018 failed to dissuade Kim from advancing his weapons development.

North Korea recently declared itself a nuclear weapons state in its constitution, according to Reuters.

However, the new laws enacted by parliament outline when such weapons can be used.

It has been reported that they have approved of using nuclear weapons in response to an attack or in a bid to stop an invasion.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol also said Seoul would provide massive amounts of economic aid if Pyongyang began to give up its arsenal.

The new legislation comes just days after Pyongyang vowed to help turn the nation into a “socialist fairyland” by introducing two separate pieces of legislation.

The two laws were intended to help advance efforts made by the governing party to bring about “a radical turn in the rural community and its policy on landscaping to achieve a rapid development of the Korean-style socialist rural community and spruce up the country into a beautiful and civilised socialist fairyland”.
