NRL 2022: Phoebe Burgess on the 'intense' pressure of divorce from Sam

Ex-NRL WAG Phoebe Burgess opens up about the ‘intense’ public scrutiny she faced after her bitter split from Rabbitohs star ex-husband Sam

Phoebe Burgess has spoken of the ‘intense’ pressure she faced from the public and the press in the wake of her separation from ex-NRL star Sam Burgess.

Speaking on her Under the Gloss podcast this week, the 33-year-old reflected on her marriage breakdown during an interview with sex coach Georgia Grace.

The former journalist described to Georgia how it felt having strangers scrutinise her relationship, after Sam, also 33, admitted to cheating on her.

‘I experienced it [people talking about my split] on a macro level,’ said Phoebe, whose ex-husband’s infidelity made headlines across Australia and eventually became fodder for a redemption story on reality show SAS Australia.

Phoebe admitted it was hard enough processing the separation without having to cope with the fact people ‘outside your relationship’ want to have their say.

She noted specifically that people like to ‘weigh in’ on relationship woes whenever there has been a breach of trust like infidelity.

Sexpert Georgia told Phoebe she couldn’t imagine ‘how much pressure’ she must have faced in the aftermath of the separation.

‘[When you’re a public figure], it’s not just your friends and loved ones. It’s these randoms that are giving you their two cents,’ she observed.

Phoebe replied that much of commentary on social media was people ‘projecting’ their own experience of cheating and break-ups.

‘They are projecting their own ideas of relationships onto you,’ she said, adding: ‘I know a lot of women, or men, choose to stay. I know I did for as long as I could.’

Sam, formerly of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, admitted on the latest season of SAS Australia to cheating on his wife with a woman in Melbourne in 2017.

He came clean about the indiscretion while under interrogation with a group of British ex-Special Forces soldiers.

The Burgesses married in 2015, separated in late 2018 and resumed their relationship in early 2019.

They split permanently in October that year and later divorced. The former couple share daughter Poppy, four, and son Billy, two.

Phoebe, who hasn’t publicly dated anyone since her split, recently told The Daily Telegraph that recording a podcast was her way of healing.

‘Everything I’ve been through is this amalgamation of who I am now,’ she said.

‘There is something on the other side, I haven’t necessarily found that completely yet but that’s the hope that I guess, you move through life.’

‘I just want them to know it’s not all glamorous. It’s not perfect, but there is life after pain,’ Phoebe concluded.
