Peston rubbishes BBC return as he dismisses stepping into Kuenssberg shoes: 'Why would I?'


The Beeb’s former economic editor made the switch to ITV in 2016 – where he fronts his own political show. In an interview with Press Gazette, Mr Peston was asked about possible replacements for Ms Kuenssberg, who is rumoured to be in discussions with BBC chiefs to step down as political editor.

He responded: “Oh, gawd knows.”

When asked if he could step into the hot seat five years after leaving the BBC, he said: “It’s not going to be me because I have zero interest in doing it.

“(Why?) Because I love what I do at the moment.

“So why would I want to go somewhere else?”

He will also write for various newspapers.

The 62-year-old broke the news on Twitter, telling his followers he is “keen to get my own voice back”, adding that the new roles would give him “a new freedom” to do journalism with “no filter”.

He wrote: “Personal announcement. After 21 years, I have decided to move on from the BBC.

“l leave behind many happy memories and wonderful colleagues.

“But from the New Year I am moving to Global to write and present political and cultural shows, and to write for newspapers.

“I think British politics and public life are going to go through an even more turbulent decade, and as I’ve said, I am keen to get my own voice back.

He will also write for various newspapers.

“I have been doing the Andrew Marr show every Sunday morning for 16 years now and that is probably more than enough time for anybody.”

BBC Radio 4 Today presenters Mishal Husain and Nick Robinson, as well as the outgoing North America editor, Jon Sopel, are all being tipped as possible replacements.
