Raven-Symoné reveals she's 'really proud' of Will Smith 'for apologizing'

Raven-Symoné is opening up about Will Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday night, revealing she has two reactions.

The 36-year-old That’s So Raven star appeared on People (The TV Show!) on Wednesday that her first answer was the, ‘non-politically-correct one,’ as she covered her mouth and said, ‘Woo, ooh!!! I mean, I love a meme. Okay?’

When asked for the second response, she said that she was proud of Smith for apologizing for the incident.

‘And my politically correct answer is, I’m really proud of Will for apologizing and standing up for what he believes in and also telling his truth,’ she added.

‘And here’s the one thing I will say, in this industry, a lot of the times, we get the tail end of a long conversation,” the TV star added.

She added that, ‘the tail end will end up in an ‘ooh!’ moment or a word or something like that, and we take it out of context, and we blow it up.’

‘We don’t know the rest of the story. And knowing that there’s a long history and he was defending his woman at the time — of course, there could have been other times to do that — but thank you for making that award show very interesting!’ she added.

Some have speculated that there has been tension between Smith and Rock since the latter hosted the Oscars in 2016, and cracked jokes about her boycotting the show that year due to a lack of diversity during the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

‘Jada said she’s not coming, protest. I was like, “Isn’t she on a TV show?” Jada’s going to boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!’ Rock joked.

He also insinuated that she was upset her husband wasn’t nominated for his work in the 2015 film Concussion.

‘It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. You’re right. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West, OK?’ Rock joked.

Whatever the case, the tension boiled over on Oscar Sunday when Rock turned to Jada, sported a shaved head due to alopecia, and said, ‘G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,’ seemingly mocking her hairstyle that was similar to Demi Moore’s look in the 1997 film G.I. Jane.

While Smith appeared to laugh at the joke, Jada was clearly not pleased, giving an eye roll to the joke, and just seconds later, Smith walked up to the stage and slapped Rock across the face.

Smith delivered his apology Monday on Instagram, stating, ‘Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
