Serena Williams plots final US Open glory by adding former World No 1 as 'new coach'

Serena Williams has appeared to hire a new coach in former world No 1 doubles player Rennar Stubbs. It comes ahead of what is expected to be the final tournament of her career at the US Open, following the 23-time Major champion’s recent retirement announcement.

Williams is set to play the last tournament of her legendary career at the upcoming US Open, which is now just a week away. And it seems the American is hoping for one final shot at Grand Slam glory after adding a new member to her team in the ninth hour.

Reports coming out of Flushing Meadows indicate that the 40-year-old has added Stubbs to her coaching team alongside Eric Hechtman – her sister Venus’ coach who she enlisted after splitting ahead of her comeback this summer. Williams has been spotted with the Australian former pro-turned-coach at her US Open practice sessions, with Stubbs bringing a new approach.

Instead of rallying with a hitting partner, the former coach of Karolina Pliskova and Genie Bouchard has been encouraging Williams to play practice sets with top players, and joined the six-time US Open champion on Arthur Ashe stadium court for a set against world No 3 Maria Sakkari on Sunday morning.

The Australian has six Grand Slam titles to her name – four in women’s doubles and two in mixed, as well as being a world No 1 in doubles. Since retiring, Stubbs has gone on to become a renowned commentator and pundit, and also tried her hand at coaching.

She worked alongside fellow retired pro Conchita Martinez on former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova’s team, before mentoring Sam Stosur and Genie Bouchard. And she has now received the call-up to work with the woman deemed the greatest of all time in tennis with her toughest task ahead – helping Williams achieve a fairytale ending.
