A new trailer has been released for the fifth season of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, foreshadowing growing conflicts in the series.

The season comes on the heels of June’s (Elisabeth Moss) killing of Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) in the season four finale, while his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) is seemingly manipulating the series of events for sympathy.

The trailer depicts Serena donning a black veil and gown in a funeral procession for Commander Waterford, baring a sinister grin amid the course of events.

The latest: A new trailer has been released for the fifth season of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, previewing a showdown between June (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) 

June suspects that Serena is making herself a sympathetic figure amid the mourning, saying ‘The grieving wife … she knows the world is watching.’

June is heard saying in the preview – which is set to a slowed down version of Christina Aguilera’s Fighter – saying, ‘I want her to know it was me … the grieving wife.’

June is warned by U.S. rep Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger), ‘A handmaid killing her commander – Gilead is not going to let that stand.’

At the end of the clip, June is seen approaching Serena saying in a voiceover, ‘You wanna fight? Let’s fight.’

June suspects that Serena is making herself a sympathetic figure amid the mourning, saying ‘The grieving wife … she knows the world is watching.’

According to a synopsis from Hulu, the fifth season will see June face ‘consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose,’ and fights ‘Gilead from a distance’ with Luke (O.T. Fagbenle) and Moira (Samira Wiley) ‘as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.’

The season will also see ‘the widowed Serena’ seek ‘to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada.’

The fifth season of the series will feature Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) forming an alliance to unite Gilead.

The cast of the show’s fifth season will also include Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, and Sam Jaeger.

The Handmaid’s Tale fifth season will begin streaming on Hulu September 14 with two new episodes, and new episodes debuting each Wednesday.
