Three Chelsea players on fire during international break as Crystal Palace clash looms

Chelsea manager Graham Potter is sure to be pleased with at least three of his players’ performances over the international break. The Blues boss is gearing up for just his second game in charge and with a tricky trip to Crystal Palace just a matter of days away, he may already be giving some thought to who could make his starting XI.

Potter has had to be patient since his appointment as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement at Stamford Bridge. His first match finished 1-1 against RB Salzburg in the Champions League two weeks ago and Chelsea haven’t been in competitive action since due to postponements and the international break.

The 47-year-old has a costly squad at his disposal after co-owner Todd Boehly sanctioned a world-record spend for a single transfer window this summer. It’s three longer-term members of the squad who have impressed over the past few days, however.

With Saturday afternoon’s showdown against Palace closing in, Express Sport takes you through the trio in question…

Reece James

Much like Havertz, James’ stint on international duty started badly as the Three Lions fell to defeat at the San Siro last week. He was, however, one of England’s best players on the night and did enough to earn back-to-back starts at right wing-back, despite the wealth of talented options in reserve.

James was heavily involved as Gareth Southgate’s side battled to a 3-3 draw with Germany on Monday. His fierce cross provided the assist for Luke Shaw to begin England’s comeback from 2-0 down and it was another all-round solid performance from the 22-year-old, who is fresh from signing a lucrative new Chelsea contract earlier this month.
