Today BEATS Sunrise in the ratings after David Koch took time off for his daughter’s wedding – as Nine’s breakfast show benefits from late-night Wimbledon coverage

Channel Nine’s Today show has closed the gap with Seven Network rivals Sunrise in the breakfast TV ratings battle.

The once-embattled program finally beat the Channel Seven program on Monday, following their late-night Wimbledon tournament coverage.

Today pulled in an average audience of 206,000 which was more than ‘Australia’s No. 1’ Sunrise’s 190,000.

Channel Nine’s Wimbledon coverage also managed to pulled 447,000 viewers from 2am.

Sunrise has seen a dip in the ratings while host David ‘Kochie’ Koch has been on annual leave.

It was announced in June that the father of four, 66, who has hosted Channel Seven’s breakfast show since 2002, will be off work for about three weeks.

The breakfast show’s ratings dropped to 207,000 the first week Kochie was away, Woman’s Day reports.

That gave the Today show, fronted by Karl Stefanovic, a chance to catch up, bringing in 200,000 the same week.

The razor thin margin between the two shows has been encouraging for Today.

Koch’s temporary replacement on Sunrise is Olympian-turned-sportscaster Matt Shirvington, who appears to now be his regular fill-in.

Koch, who just weeks ago was forced to leave work early due to a bout of laryngitis, said he was looking forward to walking his daughter Georgie down the aisle.

Georgie tied the knot with long-time partner Alex Merkel, known affectionately to the Koch family as ‘the German’, in an outdoor ceremony in Regent’s Park, London on Sunday.
