Two charged following death of toddler after ingesting fentanyl

Two Missouri adults have been charged in the death of a toddler after she ingested fentanyl, police in Missouri announced today. The child, 21-month-old Lilinna Leak, died after officers found her unconscious at a home in Florissant on November 11, police said.

A drug screening at a hospital found fentanyl in the little girl’s system, according to a probable cause statement.

Amanda Tufts, 35, and James Collins, 25, of Florissant, were charged with two counts each of endangering the welfare of a child. Both are being held without bond.

A St Louis County Police Department spokesman did not have information about the relationship between the couple and the child.

Online court records do not name attorneys to speak for the defendants.

Detectives found a large amount of drug paraphernalia, powder residue, capsules and firearms at the home, according to the probable cause statement.

Both defendants admitted they knew the child ingested fentanyl and did not seek medical attention for her, according to the statement.

A second toddler in the home was evaluated and is in good health, police said.

Fantanyl is defined as “a strong opioid painkiller” which is used to treat severe pain, for instance during or after an operation or a serious injury, or pain from cancer.

However, Anne Milgram, administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, describes the highly addictive narcotic as “the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered”.

Speaking earlier this month she said: “For the past year, confronting the fentanyl crisis has been the top priority for DEA.

The most urgent threat to our communities, our kids, and our families are the Sinaloa Cartel and CJNG who are mass producing and supplying the fentanyl that is poisoning and killing Americans.

“The Sinaloa Cartel and CJNG are ruthless, criminal organizations that use deception and treachery to drive addiction with complete disregard for human life.

“To save American lives, the DEA is relentlessly focused on defeating the Sinaloa Cartel and CJNG by degrading their operations to make it impossible for them to do business.”
