A group of international experts are to be deployed to the Russian-held nuclear powerplant in Zaporizhzhia after the Ukrainian government sent out an urgent appeal. Rafael Mariano Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said there is a “clear and present risk to the safety, security and safeguards” and “at least five of the seven indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security have been compromised”. He added that there is “concern” about the supply of spare parts to the plant as well. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been under Russian control since early March.
