Will Smith is called out online as a resurfaced video shows him mocking a bald man

Will Smith has been called out online after a resurfaced video showed the actor mocking a man for being bald.

The Fresh Prince star quickly became the talking point of Sunday night’s Oscars when he slapped Chris Rock on stage for making a joke about his wife’s hair.

Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia and Chris laughed at her expense, joking that she was ready for a role in G.I. Jane.

Yet while Will took such offence to the joke that it resulted in physical violence, Twitter users have unearthed footage of the actor making a  similar jibe in the past.

A video circulating online sees the actor, 53, during an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1991, joking with bassist John Williams about his lack of hair.

In the clip, Will can be heard saying: ‘Like, he has a rule, the bass player? He’s got a rule: He’s gotta wax his head every day. That’s a rule.’

In response to the audience’s awkward laughter, the Hollywood star says: ‘Ah these are jokes, come on.’

The clip was captioned: ‘”He gotta wax his head every morning.” Now this is a video of Will Smith saying a joke about someone with Alopecia. One reason I love the internet, it never forgets.’

While the tweet claims that John suffers with the hair loss condition, it’s unclear whether this is the case.

Users of the microblogging site were quick to comment on the viral content.

‘See hypocrisy at his best,’ one reply read, as another penned: ‘He was fine joking about someone else.. but could not handle it when the joke came about his family…. That too the joke was not bad…..’.

A third went so far as to say: ‘This is actually worse than the G.I Jane joke imo’.

However, others rushed to defend the Gettin’ Jiggy wit It hitmaker, with one criticising the original tweet: ‘No way you’re trying to equate making fun of a bald man to making fun of a bald woman.’

Another wrote an impassioned response: ‘So you’re really comparing 20 something year old Will to a 50 plus years old Chris Rock? There are things that I thought were okay to say when I was young and naive, I Know better now, Chris should’ve known better.’

Will has since has apologised for slapping Chris at Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony, saying his behaviour was ‘unacceptable and inexcusable’ and left him ’embarrassed’.

He wrote in an Instagram post that he was ’embarrassed’ by his actions, which shocked the ceremony attendees, producers and viewers.

‘Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,’ he wrote.

‘My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

‘I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.’

Will then went on to say sorry to the organisers and the producers of the show.

Chris has not responded to Will’s apology, or commented on the Sunday night incident.
